Founder
Kazuyuki Kumagai
ATTACHMENT was founded in 1991 in Tokyo by Kazuyuki Kumagai, a Japanese designer who had previously trained under Yohji Yamamoto. The brand began as a small atelier producing avant-garde tailoring with an emphasis on Japanese fabric innovation and silhouette experimentation; over thirty years it has matured into one of Japan's most quietly respected men's wear brands without ever pursuing the international hype path of its contemporaries. The ATTACHMENT vocabulary settled around several distinguishing practices: drape-heavy tailoring (the brand's wool gabardine coats are particularly cult), Japanese-mill technical wools, deconstructed shirting, and a deliberately monochromatic palette that runs from black to charcoal to taupe with occasional ivory. The brand has remained committed to small-batch production, with much of the manufacturing done in Kumagai's Aoyama atelier and partner workshops across Tokyo. ATTACHMENT operates flagship stores in Tokyo (Daikanyama, Aoyama) plus a small set of carefully chosen international stockists. The brand is independent and held by Kumagai. The label has been a defining example of what 'quiet Japanese tailoring' can look like — neither the loud avant-garde of Yamamoto's 1990s tenure nor the streetwear-anchored visual of the Tokyo cult brands, but a specific third path of disciplined drape and Japanese textile innovation.
