Axel Arigato
Axel Arigato was founded in 2014 in Gothenburg, Sweden by Albin Johansson and Max Svärdh as a direct-to-consumer sneaker brand built from the ground up around Instagram and online-first retail. The thesis was specific: in a sneaker market dominated by Nike, Adidas, and the resale ecosystem, there was room for a designer-led sneaker brand that produced premium leather minimalist silhouettes at an accessible €200-300 price point.
The Axel Arigato vocabulary settled around several specific shoe silhouettes — the Clean 90 (the brand's defining low-top, a deliberate deconstruction of the Air Force 1 idea), the Genesis runner, the Marathon trail-inspired sneaker, and the Area Lo platform sole — produced in Italian and Portuguese leather workshops. The brand expanded into ready-to-wear in 2018; the Studio Arigato in-house brand voice produces seasonal campaigns and editorial content alongside product.
The brand operates flagships in Gothenburg, Stockholm, Copenhagen, London (Soho, Covent Garden), Paris, New York, Tokyo, and around twelve other cities. Axel Arigato remains independent and held by the founders. Revenue reportedly crossed €100M in 2023. Few D2C-first sneaker brands have built such a coherent retail footprint while maintaining the digital-first cultural language they began with.
