BAO BAO ISSEY MIYAKE was launched in 2010 in Tokyo as the bag line of the Issey Miyake group, building on a foundational Miyake-vocabulary idea that had been in development since the 1990s — geometric mesh constructions of triangle, square, and tile patterns mounted on a flexible polyester base that lets the bag shift shape with each use. The line's foundational thesis was specific: produce bags that read as wearable industrial design, with a build process closer to a Japanese-engineering exercise than a traditional leather-goods atelier. The BAO BAO ISSEY MIYAKE vocabulary settled around several signatures: the Lucent series (clear PVC-faced triangle-tile totes in multiple colours), the Prism series (mirror-faced metallic tiles), the Carat series (a more geometric crystal-cut tile architecture), and the Daisy-Spring micro-bag. The line has been continuously rewritten by the in-house design team that has remained anchored to the original geometric-engineering thesis. The brand is owned by Issey Miyake Inc., which itself is held by the founders' family trust after Issey Miyake's death in August 2022. BAO BAO ISSEY MIYAKE operates dedicated stores in Tokyo (Aoyama, Marunouchi, Roppongi), Osaka, Kyoto, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Seoul, plus international wholesale through Dover Street Market, Liberty London, Lane Crawford, SSENSE, and the major Japanese department stores. The line has been one of the most quietly influential industrial-design-as-accessory propositions of the 2010s.
