Erdem was founded in 2005 in London by Erdem Moralıoğlu, a Canadian-born designer with Turkish-British heritage who trained at Toronto's Ryerson University and the Royal College of Art. The brand's defining quality from the first collection was its engagement with botanical and historical reference — Erdem's collections often anchor to a specific historical figure, a botanical species, or a regional craft tradition, with seasonal narratives that read as fully researched scholarly projects.
The Erdem vocabulary settled around several signatures: dense floral prints (often hand-drawn in the brand's London studio), tea dresses in lace and embroidery, hand-stitched applique, and a colour palette pulled from English garden references and Victorian botanical illustration. The brand has dressed Michelle Obama, the Duchess of Cambridge, Cate Blanchett, Lupita Nyong'o, and Sandra Oh. The Erdem x H&M collaboration in 2017 brought the brand's vocabulary to a mass audience.
Erdem operates flagship stores in London (Mount Street, Mayfair) and Paris, plus extensive wholesale through Bergdorf Goodman, MATCHES, MR PORTER, Net-a-Porter, and others. The brand is independently held by Moralıoğlu and various investors. Production is largely UK and Italian. Few young British designers have built such a sustained scholarly engagement with botanical and historical reference — and few have managed to translate that into a consistently commercial luxury practice over twenty years.
