kolor was founded in 2004 in Tokyo by Junichi Abe, a former Comme des Garçons HOMME designer (and the husband of Sacai founder Chitose Abe). The brand's foundational thesis was specific: produce a menswear-and-womenswear vocabulary at the intersection of Comme des Garçons-tradition fabric-mixing, deconstruction logic, and a deliberately quieter visual voice than the broader avant-garde Tokyo brands. The 'kolor' name is a deliberate reference to color, but rendered in lowercase as a deliberate-design choice.
The kolor vocabulary settled around several recurring elements: hybrid-fabric tailoring (a wool blazer with a nylon-bonded sleeve, a cotton shirt with chambray panels, a leather jacket with knit-cuff hybrids), deliberately oversized and architecturally proportioned outerwear, the brand's signature 'split' jersey pieces that combine multiple fabrics in one garment, and a colour palette anchored to deep navy, oxblood, washed-black, charcoal, sand, and the brand's recurring use of natural-dyed indigo. The brand has presented on the Paris Men's calendar since 2011.
The brand is independent and held by Abe through the Sacai parent company structure (kolor and Sacai are sister brands within the same Tokyo design house). kolor operates a flagship in Tokyo (Aoyama, the brand's home store) plus international wholesale through SSENSE, MR PORTER, MATCHES, Dover Street Market, GR8, Antonioli, Lane Crawford, the Sacai-network of Asian and European luxury specialty retailers, and a wide Japanese department-store distribution. The brand has been one of the most quietly disciplined post-2000 Tokyo menswear brands, with the husband-and-wife relationship to Sacai specifically creating a unique 'sister-brand' dynamic in contemporary Japanese fashion.
