Nicholas Daley
Nicholas Daley was founded in 2013 in London by British-Scottish-Jamaican designer Nicholas Daley as a contemporary luxury menswear brand specifically focused on what Daley described as 'a deliberately-Scottish-and-Jamaican cultural-anchored contemporary-luxury menswear vocabulary anchored to traditional British tailoring craft and Jamaican-and-jazz cultural references.' The brand has been one of the defining post-2013 London-anchored contemporary-luxury-menswear brands.
The Nicholas Daley vocabulary settled around several recurring elements: deconstructed British-mill wool tailored separates with deliberately-Scottish-tartan-and-Jamaican-pattern references, hand-knitted Scottish-and-Caribbean-aesthetic sweaters, hand-printed silk and cotton shirts with deliberately-jazz-aesthetic and Caribbean-cultural-reference motifs, the brand's iconic 'NU JAZZ' programme (a defining post-2018 product-line that connects Daley's Scottish heritage to his Jamaican heritage and the broader jazz-music cultural ecosystem), and a colour palette anchored to traditional-Scottish-tartan colour combinations (washed-red, deep-navy, forest-green), oxblood, ecru, washed-cream, plus the brand's recurring use of saturated red, mustard-yellow, and the iconic Jamaican-flag-aesthetic and jazz-album-cover colour combinations.
The brand is independent and held by Daley. Nicholas Daley operates with no permanent retail of its own, distributing through SSENSE, MR PORTER, MATCHES, Dover Street Market, Browns, the Boontheshop network in Seoul, Beams Plus, and a curated set of contemporary-luxury-menswear specialty retailers globally. The brand has presented at London Men's Fashion Week each season since 2018 and was an LVMH Prize semi-finalist in 2019. The brand has been one of the more culturally specific post-2013 London-anchored 'cross-cultural-luxury-menswear' brands.
