Founded in 2017, Fyne Audio is a relatively new Scottish hi-fi manufacturer that specializes in high-end loudspeakers. Its models can range from a few hundred bucks with its entry-level F300i bookshelf speakers, to over $50K with its flagship F1-12S floor-standing speakers.

While the company has primarily focused on passive speaker systems, designed for traditional stereo and home theater applications, it’s now taking its first genuine swing at wireless hi-fi with its first active speaker system.

And, surprisingly, it’s relatively affordable.

Its first active speaker system

The Cubitt 5 is the company’s first active speaker system. It’s comprised of two bookshelf-sized speakers, with the primary one housing the amplification, digital signal processing and wired connections.

This means that, unlike larger, more high-end active speaker systems, like KEF’s LS50 Wireless II, only one of the speakers needs to be plugged into power.

Admittedly, the Cubitt 5 doesn’t stray too far away from other compact active speaker systems (which have become an incredibly popular category). It’s quite versatile.

Each system has analog RCA and optical digital inputs, as well as HDMI eARC, so it can be integrated in a larger system or be used as TV speakers. It has a built-in phono preamplifier (that supports both moving-magnet and moving-coil cartridges), so it can directly connect to your turntable.

On the streaming side, it has built-in Bluetooth 5.0 with aptX HD and AAC support. There’s no Wi-Fi streaming.

Trickle-down driver technology

The main feature of the Cubitt 5 is that each speaker is integrated with the company’s latest-generation IsoFlare point-source driver, which is trickled down from most of its higher-end lines, as well as its FyneFlute surround technology. According to the brand, this combination helps it deliver a “precise stereo imaging and immersive natural sound no matter where you sit in the room.”

Despite its relatively compact size, the Cubitt 5 is a pretty beefy system. It features 240 watts of DSP-controlled amplification, which the company claims enables it to deliver a “clean, detailed, powerful sound at any volume.”

The system supports high-resolution audio up to 24-bit/96kHz.
