Denim Styling Guide: How Wash and Fit Change Everything

Three wash buckets — raw indigo, mid-blue, light wash — paired against four fit categories from straight to wide-leg. Practical rules for what to wear with what.

Most denim styling failures come from mismatching wash to context, not from picking the wrong jeans. Get the wash-context combination right and almost any decent pair of jeans will look intentional.

**Raw indigo (unwashed, 14oz+ selvedge):** These read as workwear-formal. Pair with leather boots, oxford shirts, chore coats, knit polos. Avoid graphic tees and athletic footwear — the contrast reads sloppy. The Common Projects Achilles or visvim FBT pair best; running silhouettes fight the denim's weight.

**Mid-blue (3-12 months wear or factory-washed):** The workhorse. Goes with everything — tees, polos, button-downs, sweatshirts, sneakers from Stan Smith to Nike SB. The most versatile because the wash is neutral.

**Light wash (heavily washed or vintage-recreation):** Reads casual and California. Best with white tees, terry polos, sandals, and minimalist sneakers. Avoid pairing with formal outerwear — a light-wash jean with a navy blazer reads off-duty rather than considered.

**Fit pairings:** Straight cuts (Levi's 501, A.P.C. Petit Standard) pair with chukka boots, loafers, and low-top sneakers. Slim-tapered (Studio D'Artisan SD-908, Iron Heart IH-666S) work better with workwear boots and chunky sneakers. Wide-leg (Kapital Century, ortega-pattern Studio D'Artisan) need low-volume tops — drop-shoulder tee or untucked oxford — to balance proportions. Cropped (Maison Margiela 5-pocket cropped) demand visible footwear; pair with high-cuff socks and exposed shoe shaft.

**The "Canadian Tuxedo" (denim-on-denim):** Works if the washes contrast meaningfully. Raw-indigo jacket over light-wash jeans, or vice versa. Same-wash head-to-toe reads costume.

**Care that affects styling:** Raw denim shapes to the body over 6-12 months. Washing too early flattens the silhouette and disrupts fade patterns. Spot-clean for the first year; full wash after that. The fades you develop become the styling element that distinguishes your pair from anyone else's.
