Cotton Weights Explained: From 4oz Jersey to 32oz Selvedge Denim

Cotton fabric weight (measured in oz/yd²) is the single most important determinant of how a garment hangs, ages, and feels. A complete reference.

Cotton fabric weight is expressed in ounces per square yard (oz/yd²). The number describes how heavy a square yard of the finished fabric is — heavier weights pack more cotton fibers into the same area, resulting in denser, more structured, more durable fabric. Understanding weight ranges helps you predict how a garment will hang, drape, and age before you buy.

**3-5 oz (lightweight jersey):** Standard mass-market t-shirts, summer button-downs, lining fabric. Very breathable, drapes loosely, prone to deformation. Wears out in 1-2 years of regular use. Examples: H&M tees, Uniqlo Airism, most fast-fashion shirting.

**5-7 oz (medium jersey & light woven):** Standard polo shirts (Lacoste piqué), oxford button-down shirts (Brooks Brothers), summer chinos. Better drape and durability than lightweight; wears 3-5 years with care.

**7-10 oz (heavyweight jersey & light denim):** Premium t-shirts (Lady White, John Elliott, Auralee), summer denim (Levi's 501 lightweight versions), summer chore coats. Structured enough to hold shape, soft enough to be comfortable in warm weather.

**10-13 oz (mid-weight denim & cotton twill):** The most common denim weight (Levi's 501, A.P.C. Petit Standard), standard chinos, chore coat fabric. Drapes naturally, breaks in over months not years, comfortable across three seasons.

**13-16 oz (heavy denim & workwear):** The "real workwear" weight (Iron Heart IH-666, Studio D'Artisan SD-908, Pure Blue Japan 16oz). Stiff initially, breaks in over 6-12 months, develops dramatic fade patterns. Excellent for fall/winter; too hot for summer.

**16-20 oz (heavyweight denim):** Specialty Japanese denim (Pure Blue Japan 18oz, Iron Heart 21oz). Initially almost board-stiff, requires committed wear-in period. Develops the most pronounced fade patterns. For dedicated denim collectors only.

**21-25 oz (ultraheavy denim):** Extreme weight Japanese denim (Naked & Famous 25oz). Comparable to wearing canvas pants. Niche category — admirable engineering but uncomfortable for daily wear.

**26-32 oz (museum-piece denim):** Naked & Famous 32oz Heavyweight (released 2014), Iron Heart 25oz Apocalypse. Designed as proof-of-concept rather than functional wear; treated as collector items.

**What weight you actually want:**
- Daily wear t-shirt: 5.5-7 oz heavyweight jersey
- Summer button-down: 5 oz oxford or 6 oz seersucker
- Chinos: 8-10 oz cotton twill
- Year-round denim: 13-14 oz selvedge
- Heritage workwear chore coat: 10-12 oz cotton moleskine or duck canvas
- Winter workwear jeans: 16-21 oz selvedge

**Why this matters:** A 14oz pair of denim broken in over 12 months becomes the most comfortable garment in your wardrobe. A 4oz pair of denim loses shape within 6 months and never develops character. Weight is the single biggest variable in long-term wardrobe satisfaction.
