Dover Street Market Ginza
Dover Street Market Ginza opened in March 2012 in Tokyo on Ginza 6-chome, in a seven-floor freestanding building converted from a former cosmetics company headquarters. The store was the second Dover Street Market location (after London) and represented Rei Kawakubo and Adrian Joffe's first attempt to translate the London concept into the more architecturally formal Ginza luxury district. The store's interior was designed by Sou Fujimoto and Rei Kawakubo in collaboration with a rotating roster of artists and architects who create the seasonal installation spaces.
The Dover Street Market Ginza vocabulary settled around several practices specific to the Tokyo store: a more architecturally formal building presentation than the London or New York locations, an upper-floor Comme des Garçons section, brand-installation spaces (Junya Watanabe, Sacai, Undercover, Visvim, Issey Miyake, sacai, Toga, Yohji Yamamoto's Y's line, Wales Bonner, ERL, Cav Empt), a basement-level Rose Bakery Ginza café, and a particularly strong Japanese-domestic brand selection that is often the first place international visitors discover the more domestic-focused Tokyo brands.
Dover Street Market Ginza is owned by Comme des Garçons Co. Ltd. The store has become one of the defining destinations of Ginza streetwear-and-luxury retail and is the most-visited DSM globally. The Ginza store moved from Ginza 6-chome to a larger location in Ginza Six in 2017 (briefly), then back to a renovated standalone building in 2024. The seasonal installation programme — coordinated with the corresponding seasonal show calendars of the represented brands — has been a defining force in Tokyo luxury retail since 2012.
