Joyce was founded in 1971 in Hong Kong by Joyce Ma (Ma Chiu-min, 馬郭志清), wife of Adrian Ma (former Hong Kong fashion-industry executive), as a multi-brand luxury concept store specifically focused on bringing the kind of inventory (early Issey Miyake, Yohji Yamamoto, Comme des Garçons, the original Antwerp Six designers) that wasn't otherwise available in Hong Kong at the time. The brand has been one of the defining post-1970 Hong Kong-anchored avant-garde-luxury concept stores, with Ma anchoring the brand's continuous design-buying direction for over 40 years. The Joyce vocabulary settled around several distinguishing things: a buyer-led brand list anchored to the most-avant-garde luxury houses (early Comme des Garçons — Joyce was the defining Greater-China early relationship for the brand; Yohji Yamamoto; Issey Miyake; Maison Margiela; Rick Owens; Junya Watanabe; the broader Tokyo-and-Antwerp avant-garde network), the iconic Joyce Hong Kong flagship at Galleria Two Hong Kong (Central), the long-running Joyce magazine cultural-programming initiative, the Joyce Café concept (the brand's deliberately-editorial in-store coffee-and-content space), and the brand's continuous commitment to bringing emerging-designer brands into Greater China before they had broader Asian retail visibility. Joyce is owned by Lane Crawford Joyce Group (the Hong Kong holding company controlled by the Wu family, descendants of the Lane and Crawford founding families), with the broader Lane Crawford Joyce Group operating Lane Crawford, Joyce, and several other Hong Kong-anchored luxury retail concepts.
