Nepenthes was founded in 1988 in Tokyo by Keizo Shimizu as a small import-and-design business specifically focused on bringing American workwear-and-traditional-menswear inventory (early Carhartt, Filson, Pendleton, Russell Athletic, Dickies) into the Japanese market, with the parent operation built around what Shimizu described as 'the cultural conversation between American post-war menswear and Japanese textile-and-craft traditions.' The brand expanded through the 1990s and 2000s into a multi-brand parent company operating Engineered Garments (the New York-based brand designed by Daiki Suzuki), Needles (Shimizu's own Tokyo design label), South2 West8 (the fly-fishing-and-mountaineering streetwear brand), and the Nepenthes retail concept. The Nepenthes vocabulary settled around several distinguishing things: the multi-brand retail concept that houses Engineered Garments, Needles, South2 West8, Nepenthes-own-label apparel, and a curated buyer-led brand list anchored to American workwear and Japanese craft makers (Filson, Pendleton, Mountain Research, the Hender Scheme footwear line, Posh Isolation, Beams Plus, and the broader Tokyo Americana network), the iconic Nepenthes 35th Anniversary exhibition programme, and the Nepenthes Field Notes seasonal photography-and-essay publishing programme. Nepenthes is independent and held by Shimizu through Nepenthes Group. The brand operates flagship retail in Tokyo (Shibuya — Nepenthes Tokyo, the brand's home store; Daikanyama — Nepenthes Daikanyama), Osaka, plus international flagships in New York (Garment District — Nepenthes New York), Los Angeles (the Nepenthes LA store opened 2023), London (the Nepenthes London cycle through pop-ups).
