The RealReal
The RealReal was founded in 2011 in San Francisco by Julie Wainwright (the former CEO of Pets.com and Reel.com) as a luxury-secondhand authenticated marketplace specifically focused on bringing professional-grade authentication to the previously-informal secondary luxury market. The brand's foundational thesis was specific: build a US-anchored secondhand-luxury platform that could legitimise the resale luxury category through physical authentication, editorial product-page format, and white-glove consignment services.
The RealReal vocabulary settled around several distinguishing things: physical authentication of every product through dedicated authentication centres in San Francisco, Brisbane (California), Phoenix, New Jersey, and New York, the iconic consignment-model business (where sellers ship product to The RealReal, which photographs, authenticates, prices, lists, and ships at no upfront cost to the seller in exchange for a commission percentage), the iconic luxury-resale-category positioning at the upper end of the secondhand market (Hermès Birkin, Chanel Classic Flap, Cartier Love bracelets, Rolex Submariners, plus the broader LVMH-Kering-Richemont resale inventory), and the long-running RealReal Authenticate authentication-API partnership programme with major luxury retailers.
The RealReal is publicly listed on the NASDAQ (NASDAQ: REAL) with Wainwright having departed the CEO role in 2022. The platform operates 17 physical luxury-retail flagship stores across the US (San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Atlanta, Chicago, Miami, Dallas, Washington DC, Boston, plus several other major US cities), plus the substantial e-commerce platform serving 100+ countries. The platform stocks approximately 1 million unique products at any time across luxury fashion, fine jewellery, watches, and contemporary art. The brand has been one of the defining post-2011 US-anchored secondary luxury platforms.
