ACRONYM was founded in Munich in 1994 by Errolson Hugh and Michaela Sachenbacher as a design consultancy specialising in technical apparel. For the first decade the studio worked behind the scenes — designing for Burton, Stone Island Shadow Project (a long-running creative partnership), Nemen, and various other technical clients. The first ACRONYM-branded collection was released in 2002 and consisted of three jackets; the brand has retained a deliberately small product surface ever since.
The vocabulary is uncompromisingly technical: hard-shell membranes (Gore-Tex, Schoeller, Polartec), magnetic pocket closures, modular bag systems, and the brand's hallmark IS-PA fixed-load-bearing jacket constructions. Hugh's design background includes architecture and martial arts; ACRONYM garments are engineered around fighting-arts mobility and military-grade material specifications. Prices routinely exceed €1,000 per piece. The brand has no flagship store and sells through a tightly controlled set of stockists.
ACRONYM's collaborations include Nike (the long-running ACRONYM × Presto and ACRONYM × Air Force 1), Stone Island Shadow Project, and recently the Lamy fountain-pen partnership. Hugh has also designed for visvim, Mackintosh, and Arc'teryx Veilance. The brand is one of the foundational examples of what 'techwear' as a category can be when treated as serious engineering rather than fashion aesthetic. Few brands have built such enduring cult devotion across so small an output.
