Alexander Wang
Alexander Wang was born in San Francisco in 1983 and dropped out of Parsons School of Design in his sophomore year to launch his own label in 2005. The first collections — a small range of cashmere knitwear — were sold to Barneys New York and Opening Ceremony within months. Wang opened his New York studio at 21 and won the CFDA / Vogue Fashion Fund in 2008 at age 24.
The Alexander Wang vocabulary settled around an aesthetic that bridged downtown New York and aspirational hip-hop: heavy-leather moto jackets, ribbed knits, sweat-set tailoring, fur-trimmed parkas, and the kind of slouchy off-duty model wardrobe that defined the late-2000s 'It Girl' silhouette. The T by Alexander Wang diffusion line (launched 2008) brought the brand's vocabulary into a more accessible price tier. From 2012-2015 Wang served as creative director of Balenciaga, where he pushed the Kering-owned house toward a more graphic, streetwear-adjacent register.
In 2020-2021 the brand was the subject of widely reported sexual misconduct allegations involving multiple young men in fashion-adjacent settings; Wang denied the allegations and the brand continued operating, though the cultural conversation around the brand has been notably more complicated since. The company is owned by Wang himself and remains headquartered in New York. The Mercer Street flagship operates alongside a Beijing flagship; recent collections have leaned heavily on Chinese consumer-facing campaigns.
