Youths in Balaclava was founded in 2017 in Singapore by designer Idham Hisham and a collaborator team specifically focused on what the founders described as 'a deliberately-rave-club post-internet streetwear vocabulary anchored to 1990s Singapore youth-culture archives.' The brand has been one of the defining post-2017 Southeast-Asia-anchored streetwear brands, with the deliberately-conceptual conceptual-fashion-week-meets-rave-aesthetic positioning anchoring the broader cultural position. The Youths in Balaclava vocabulary settled around several recurring elements: deconstructed graphic-print tees and hoodies with deliberately-conceptual print compositions, hand-painted leather outerwear, the brand's iconic balaclava-and-mask accessories (the defining product category from which the brand takes its name), deliberately-deconstructed denim and technical-fabric tailored separates, and a colour palette anchored to washed-black, oxblood, ecru, washed-charcoal, plus the brand's recurring use of saturated electric-blue, butter-yellow, and the post-internet-rave-aesthetic accent combinations.
