Diesel was founded in 1978 in Molvena, Italy by Renzo Rosso, an Italian denim entrepreneur who at age 23 took over the small Genius Group denim factory and rebranded it as 'Diesel' — a name chosen because, in Rosso's words, it 'sounded global'. The brand pioneered industrial denim-treatment techniques (acid wash, stone wash, vintage-effect treatments) that became the foundation of late-1970s European designer denim. By the mid-1990s Diesel was one of the most-recognised denim brands in the world. The brand's cultural arc through the 1990s and early 2000s was defined by a series of award-winning, provocative campaigns under Diesel's in-house creative team (the 'For Successful Living' campaign, the 'Be Stupid' campaign) that used surrealism, irony, and social commentary in ways no other denim brand of the era attempted. The early-2010s slump was reversed by Glenn Martens' creative direction (2020 to present), which has pulled Diesel back into the contemporary luxury / streetwear conversation through Y2K-revival aesthetics, the 1DR bag, and the Tape Suede line. Diesel is the anchor brand of the OTB Group (Only The Brave), which Rosso founded and which also owns Maison Margiela, Marni, Jil Sander, and Viktor & Rolf. The brand is privately held and headquartered in Breganze, Italy. Few denim brands have so cleanly weathered a multi-decade brand-image cycle and returned to relevance through a creative-director-led reset.
