Herno was founded in 1948 in Lesa, on the shore of Lake Maggiore in Northern Italy, by Giuseppe Marenzi as a small workshop producing raincoats and overcoats specifically engineered for the wet North Italian climate. The brand's foundational thesis was specific and technically driven: produce technically-performant outerwear using innovative fabric treatments — early plastic-coated cottons, then nylon-bonded wool, then bonded-membrane technical fabrics — that combined the cut and detail of Italian tailoring with weather-protective engineering. The Herno vocabulary settled around several specific products: lightweight quilted nylon down jackets (the brand's signature category, with the Laminar series being the technical-fabric-of-the-decade in the 2010s), waterproof technical raincoats, hybrid wool-and-nylon technical overcoats, and a colour palette anchored to navy, black, oxblood, ecru, and military-derived greens and browns. The brand's collaborations with Pirelli, Vibram, Ferrari, and the Italian luxury houses have anchored Herno's position in the technical-Italian-luxury conversation. The brand is independent and family-controlled by the Marenzi family (Claudio Marenzi, son of the founder Giuseppe, is the current chairman). Herno operates flagship retail in Milan (Via Sant'Andrea), Rome (Via del Babuino), Tokyo (Aoyama), Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, plus extensive wholesale through SSENSE, MR PORTER, MATCHES, Mytheresa, the major US and European luxury department stores, and a wide Japanese department-store distribution. The brand's bonded-membrane Laminar series has been widely regarded as one of the defining technical-luxury outerwear product lines of the post-2010 era.
