A Ma Maniére was founded in 2012 in Atlanta by James Whitner as a small luxury-anchored multi-brand store specifically focused on what Whitner described as 'bringing European luxury inventory to the African-American customer base of the American South.' The brand's foundational thesis was specific and culturally rigorous: build a luxury-retail destination in Atlanta that would establish the city — historically under-served by European luxury houses — as a legitimate participant in the global luxury conversation, with a particular focus on serving the African-American customer base that had been overlooked by traditional US luxury retail. The A Ma Maniére vocabulary settled around several distinguishing things: a buyer-led brand list anchored to LVMH, Kering, and Richemont luxury houses (Bottega Veneta, Saint Laurent, Loewe, Givenchy) plus a particularly strong selection of contemporary independent and emerging-designer brands (Fear of God, Aimé Leon Dore, Wales Bonner, Cole Buxton), the iconic long-running A Ma Maniére × Air Jordan collaboration programme (the A Ma Maniére × Air Jordan 3, Air Jordan 4, Air Jordan 5, Air Jordan 1, and Air Jordan 12 releases have been among the most-collected Jordan collaborations of the 2020-2024 period), and the iconic A Ma Maniére in-house apparel programme. The brand is independent and held by Whitner through The Whitaker Group, which also operates Social Status (the brand's sister sneaker-focused store), APB, and a wider network of streetwear-and-luxury retail concepts.
