TsUM - the 'Central Universal Department Store' - dates to 1908, when Scottish entrepreneurs Andrew Muir and Archibald Mirrielees opened a six-storey Gothic Revival emporium on Petrovka opposite the Bolshoi Theatre. After decades as a Soviet flagship it was acquired by the Mercury luxury group in 2002 and converted into Russia's primary luxury department store, today carrying more than 1,000 brands including Gucci, Prada, Bottega Veneta, Givenchy, Valentino, Saint Laurent, Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga and Marni alongside an extensive perfumery, watch hall and a TsUM Globus Gourmet restaurant on the top floor. Despite Western brand pullbacks after 2022, TsUM has continued to operate via parallel imports and an active tsum.ru e-commerce site, remaining the dominant luxury retail anchor in Moscow.
