Miu Miu was founded in 1993 by Miuccia Prada and named for her own childhood nickname. The brief was simple: a younger, more playful, more rule-breaking sister to Prada — same intellectual foundation, but freer to be ugly, sweet, hot, awkward, or all four at once. The early collections used vintage references, leopard prints, and exposed underwear-as-outerwear constructions that established a vocabulary very different from the parent house's industrial-luxury cool. For two decades Miu Miu existed in Prada's shadow as a smaller, quieter line. The pivot came around 2021-2022 when the brand's mini-skirt and pleated micro-skirt collections went viral, the Lyst index named Miu Miu the hottest brand in fashion for five consecutive quarters, and Margot Robbie / Sydney Sweeney / Emma Corrin moments cemented Miu Miu as the cultural reference point for an entire generation of Gen-Z and millennial women. The Miu Miu Wander bag, the Arcadie bag, the satin ballet flat, and the cardigan-as-shirt-as-bra layering all became signature codes. In 2024 Miu Miu's revenue surpassed €1B for the first time; it is now Prada Group's fastest-growing brand and on track to challenge Prada's main line in absolute size. Miuccia Prada continues as sole creative director and remains the singular author of both houses.
