Balmain
Balmain was founded in 1945 in Paris by Pierre Balmain, who had previously worked alongside Christian Dior and Cristóbal Balenciaga at Lucien Lelong. Balmain's couture vocabulary defined a strain of post-war Parisian glamour: heavily embroidered evening gowns, fitted day suits, and a particular kind of architectural shoulder that recurs through the house's twentieth-century output. The brand dressed Marlene Dietrich, the Duchess of Windsor, and Brigitte Bardot in the 1950s and 60s.
The modern Balmain era began with Christophe Decarnin (2005-2011, the rock-glam shoulder-heavy years) and was redefined by Olivier Rousteing, who took over in 2011 at age 25 — making him one of the youngest creative directors of a major couture house in history. Rousteing's tenure pulled Balmain into the contemporary social-media-luxury conversation: military-inflected jackets, denim with the BB monogram, the Balmain Army (Kim Kardashian, the Jenners, the Hadid sisters), and a vocabulary that prized scale, embellishment, and Instagram-readiness.
Balmain is wholly owned by Mayhoola for Investments (the Qatari fund that also controls Valentino at various points). The brand operates flagships in Paris (Avenue Montaigne, Rue Saint-Honoré), Milan, New York, Beverly Hills, Tokyo, Seoul, and Riyadh. The Couture line was relaunched in 2019 — the first house to do so since the historic 1990s couture withdrawals — making Balmain one of the few brands fielding both ready-to-wear and certified couture.
