NET-A-PORTER was founded in 2000 in London by Natalie Massenet (former Tatler fashion editor) as one of the first luxury e-commerce platforms, with the foundational thesis that luxury could be purchased online if the editorial-shopping experience matched the magazine voice and packaging of the in-store luxury experience. The site's editorial-led product page format, magazine-style shoots, and same-day London delivery (a defining service from the early years) became the template the broader online-luxury industry copied. The NET-A-PORTER vocabulary settled around several distinguishing practices: a buyer-led brand list anchored to the major LVMH and Kering houses (Saint Laurent, Bottega Veneta, Loewe, Givenchy, Balenciaga) plus carefully chosen contemporary brands (The Row, Khaite, Toteme, Cecilie Bahnsen, Ulla Johnson); the weekly Porter magazine (launched 2014 as a tabloid-sized fashion print publication tied to the site); the long-running Net Sustain edit; and the Net-A-Porter Vanguard programme that surfaces emerging women's designers. NET-A-PORTER was acquired by Richemont in 2010, merged with YOOX into YOOX Net-a-Porter Group in 2015, and in late 2024 the Net-a-Porter Group was sold by Richemont to Mytheresa (rebranded as LuxExperience post-deal). Massenet left in 2015. The platform stocks approximately 800 brands across womenswear, jewellery, watches, and beauty; operates fulfilment from UK, US, and Hong Kong centres. The site has been the single most influential force in defining what online luxury womenswear looks like.
