Fear of God ESSENTIALS
Fear of God ESSENTIALS launched in 2018 as a more accessibly priced diffusion line of Fear of God, the Los Angeles–based luxury brand Jerry Lorenzo founded in 2013. Lorenzo's father (also named Jerry Lorenzo) is a former Major League Baseball executive, and the family business background informed his approach: build a brand around a small number of perfected wardrobe staples, sell mostly through carefully chosen retail partners, and use restraint where competitors lean into spectacle.
The ESSENTIALS vocabulary is precise: cream and bone-toned hoodies and sweatpants, oversized cuts, double-layered cotton, hand-felt logo embroidery, and minimal-typography branding. Initially sold exclusively through PacSun (an unusual luxury-meets-mall strategy), the line went so viral in 2020-2022 that PacSun built a dedicated Essentials Studio in their retail footprint. The 7th Collection and ongoing collections have made ESSENTIALS one of the most recognisable pieces of mid-2020s wardrobe.
Lorenzo maintains full creative ownership of Fear of God and ESSENTIALS. Production is largely in Italy. He has also held a creative director role at Adidas (2020-2024), running the Fear of God Athletics sub-brand. The Melrose Avenue flagship and the Beverly Hills atelier anchor the LA-luxury identity; ESSENTIALS is distributed widely. Few brands of the past decade have so cleanly translated luxury-house production standards into a sub-$200 streetwear price point.
