CALMAR
Brands
Isabel Marant launched her eponymous Paris label in 1994, after several years designing for Marithé + François Girbaud and her own knitwear line. The brand's foundational thesis was anchored to a specific Parisian-bohemian woman's wardrobe: ankle boots, embroidered blouses, wedge sneakers, draped jersey dresses, fringed jackets, and a deliberately lived-in palette of indigo, sand, charcoal, and rust. The Isabel Marant vocabulary settled around several culturally specific items: the 2009 Bekett wedge sneaker (which started a five-year wave of imitations), the embroidered Voila blouse, the fringed Crosby boot, and the Étoile diffusion line (launched 2000) which translated the main-line proposition into a more casual day price tier. Marant has remained creative director throughout, with no parent-house dilution. The brand is owned 51 percent by Marant and her husband Jérôme Dreyfuss since the 2016 buyout from previous minority partners. Isabel Marant operates flagships in Paris (six stores including Rue Saint-Honoré, Rue de Charonne, Rue Jacob), London (Mayfair), New York (West Village, Madison Avenue), Tokyo (Aoyama), Hong Kong, Shanghai, and around 70 international stores. The brand has been a defining example of how a single designer can build a Paris luxury house without conglomerate backing while remaining culturally legible across thirty years.
