Ganni was founded in 2000 by Frans Truelsen in Copenhagen as a cashmere knitwear brand and bought in 2009 by Truelsen's friends Nicolaj and Ditte Reffstrup — a married couple who had been customers. Ditte became creative director, Nicolaj became CEO, and over the next fifteen years they rebuilt Ganni from a cashmere line into the defining brand of Scandinavian cool-girl style, popularising Copenhagen Fashion Week and bridging Nordic minimalism with playful pattern, party-dress femininity, and a sustainability narrative.
The brand's product canon settled around feminine prints (the floral midi dress, the gingham wrap, the pastel knit), bold knitwear, and shoes (the iconic Brogue Ballerina). The 'Responsibility Report', published since 2018, makes Ganni one of the most transparent mid-luxury brands on environmental footprint, with around 90% of fabrics now classified as 'preferred' (recycled, organic, or certified-renewable). The 'Fabrics of the Future' programme co-develops alternatives like microbial leather, OceanSafe knits, and ECONYL nylon.
Ganni went through a 51% acquisition by L Catterton (LVMH's PE arm) in 2017 and is reportedly on an IPO or majority-sale path. Revenue passed €200M in 2023. The brand operates around 80 stores globally, with flagships in Copenhagen (Strøget, Bredgade), London (Wardour, Stoke Newington), New York (West Broadway, Williamsburg), and Tokyo. Ditte and Nicolaj remain in place.
