Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen launched The Row in 2006 with a single goal: produce a perfect white T-shirt. The label is named after London's Savile Row, signaling bespoke-tailoring rigor; the production base is Italy, the materials are rare cashmeres, calf-skins, sea-island cottons; the design language is the deliberate refusal of logos, of trend, of any flourish that would date the garment. In the first decade the brand earned cult status among editors and stylists who treated it as a private vocabulary. By the mid-2010s the broader culture caught up, and 'quiet luxury' — a term The Row's customers had refused to use — became a global movement. Stockists were kept deliberately scarce; the brand still does not advertise, does not maintain a social media presence in any meaningful sense, and the founders give almost no interviews. What emerged is a category-defining example of how to build a luxury house in the social-media era by refusing every premise of social media. CFDA's Womenswear Designer of the Year four times, Menswear once, runner-up for European luxury group acquisitions year after year, and still independent. The Row is the answer to the question of how much you can do by carefully doing less.
